Santa Monica Playhouse in Association with Pith-e Productions Los Angeles Presents
“Dave & Tom’s A Tribute to Dave and Tom”

A look back at the comedy sketches, characters, and monologues that made
the eponymous comedy team the corpses that they are today.

Santa Monica, CA. August 13, 2006 –

Santa Monica Playhouse announces the return of comedy duo David Beeler and Tom Konkle in “Dave and Tom’s: A Tribute to Dave and Tom”, a poison pen letter to the tribute show. This parody of self-importance uses the self-tribute framework to make for a hilarious evening with the fictitious British comedy team, Dave and Tom. Previewing, Saturday, September 16th at 8:00 pm.

“Creme de la Creme of comedy…. These two are worthy successors to the comedy mantles of the greats…” says-Backstage West

In an evening that promises up front to be a cloying, wistful, brazenly maudlin affair, Dave and Tom present a look back at the comedy sketches, characters, and monologues that made the eponymous comedy team the corpses that they are today.

“Dave and Tom’s: A Tribute to Dave and Tom” is made all the more silly by the fact that they claim to have passed away long ago, before the tribute show they are performing has even premiered. Time and your hair will stand on end when these two fictitious blokes salute their departed selves well in advance of their actual demise. As Dave said, or perhaps it was Tom, “Who better to pay tribute to the comedy team, Dave and Tom, who were unappreciated in their time– or indeed anytime– than writer/performers Dave and Tom?” Even in death, they are angling for praise. “It is a journey through a stiff body of work that remains funny in obscurity. They shall be forever lost, never mourned,” says long time stage manager George J. Vennes III (get GV permission)

Written and directed by David Beeler and Tom Konkle, best known to local audiences for their collaborations in the seminal British comedy revues, Beyond the Fringe and Good Evening and the World Premier of ‘Owl-Stretching Time”, original sketches by Monty Python (2001) as well as their original tribute to the dry wit and comic ‘stylings’ of Cook and Moore, Good Night, sixty minutes of solid comedy which premiered to critical acclaim at Santa Monica Playhouse in 2003.

That was followed by another original piece, “Double Act with Tom & Dave” (2004). Dave and Tom have been writing and performing comedy together since 1999. As members of the award-winning sketch troupe, Lester McFwap, Dave and Tom (who is a founding member of the group) have performed original McFwap material including “Fear”, “The Three Rs” and “It’s the Pigs, Sir!” at Santa Monica Playhouse as well as various venues around the country. The LA based troupe turned its attention to the camera in with a series of short films and a TV pilot, McFwap! which was green lit (is “green lit” a word – or supposed to be a funny word? It’s an industry word which means given the go-ahead) by the Sci-Fi network. Their podcasts can be found all over the Internet, but most specifically at http://www.daveandtom.com. Dave and Tom have just finished executive producing a feature length sketch film with McFwap for Comedy Express, a new National comedy network, Comedy Express is partnered with them. Production Stage Manager George J. Vennes III, the man behind the scenes on all of Dave and Tom’s shows at the Playhouse, will be hosting a nightly wake and is glad to see them go…again.

“Dave & Tom’s: A Tribute to Tom and Dave’” previews Saturday, September 16, 2006 at 8:00 pm and plays for seven weeks,

Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 7:00 pm through Sunday, October 29, 2006 in The Other Space at Santa Monica Playhouse. All tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased by calling 1-310-394-9779 ext. 1 or online at SantaMonicaPlayhouse.com.
